Roberto Hernandez was a prominent Latino leader in Milwaukee in the 1970s. He was one of
the first Latinos to enroll at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the 1960s, and he
became a leading advocate for the creation of the Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute (SSOI)
in 1970. He also worked with the State of Wisconsin, assisting with the creation of the
State's first Migrant Worker's Act. Hernandez also worked in Minnesota and Texas, focusing
on youth and community advocacy. He died in 1994 at the age of 50.
