Tom Mohr Papers, 1950-1964

Biography/History

Tom and Gretchen Mohr started working for the Milwaukee Bureau of Civil Defense in 1950. They gave numerous instructional lectures and demonstrations on what to do in the event of a natural disaster or nuclear attack.

The Milwaukee Civil Defense Bureau started shortly after World War II, but became more prominent after the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. In the case of a nuclear attack, Milwaukeeans were instructed to leave the city and scatter to adjacent villages and towns.
