CHIEF CLERK
  C. E. SHAFFER (Rep.) has been chief clerk of the
assembly at every session since 1907, being re-elected
time and agatin without opposition. He was born on
a farm in Dane county where be worked until he be-
came of age, except during the time spent in school.
He was educated in the common schools, business col-
lege and private academy, after which he taught in
the district and graded schools. He was instructor
for a time in mathematics and bookkeeping in the
Capital City Commercial College, since which time he
has been engaged in the real estate and insurance
business. He has taken an active part in politics,
having served three terms as secretary on the Dane
county Republican committee.
               SERGEANT-AT-ARMS
  THOMAS GRANT CRETNEY (Rep.) is serving his
third term as sergeant-at-arms of the assembly, hav-
ing been elected in 1917 and re-elected in 1919 and
1921. He was born in the town of Ridgeway, Iowa
county, Aug. 20, 1870, attended the public schools dur-
ing the winter and worked on his father's farm in,
summer. When 22 years of age he started to learn
the 'carpenter's trade and three years later became a
successful building contractor. He served as presi-
dent of the village of Ridgeway and in 1909 assisted
in the organization of the State Bank of Arena, be-
coming its president. He was elected to the assem-
bly in 1914 from Iowa county and at the expiration

of his term moved to Madison and engaged in the
real estate business.
