The city now has about 2,000 inhabitants, was constructed in the llth century by the Counts of Belleme, around the Abbey of Notre- Dame-des-Deserts. The church still remains today as the parish church, Renaissance in style with a Roman portal. The abbey was founded by the Benedictines. The city is located in what is called "Le Bocage Normand" north of Domfront.
