BACKING LUMBER
Also suitable for Die Lumber used by PAPER BOX, CARTON, and ENVELOPE MANUFACTURERS.
General Information > Plain, Glued-Up, and Laminated
BACKING LUMBER should be uniform in thickness and as free from warp as possible. In the preparation of millions
of feet of lumber per year, we have developed a scientifically correct process of properly seasoning and temper-
ing lumber so as to make it practically immune from defects which occur in improperly prepared lumber.
HAMILTON BACKING LUMBER is made in three styles: Plain, Glued-Up, and Lam-
Inated. The Plain and Glued-Up styles are made of Birch or Cherry, and the Laminated
style is made of Birch only, in 5 ply. See illustration and description on next page.
FOR ELECTROTYPERS: We supply Plain and Glued-Up Backing Lumber 25/32 inch (ap-
proximately 78I thousandths inch) thick. See illustration and description below and on
next page.
FOR PHOTO ENGRAVERS: We supply Plain and Glued-Up Backing Lumber 7/8 inch
(approximately 875 thousandths inch) thick. See illustration and descriptions below and on
next page.
Those who have facilities for dressing down Backing Lumber will find it profitable to order either 25/32 or 7/8 inch
standard thickness. Those who have no facilities for dressing down lumber may purchase our Backing Lumber planed
to any thickness not over 7/8 inch. When ordering backing planed to gauge, the exact thickness in thousandths
should be specified. After deducting the thickness of the plate, an additional two thousandths should be deducted
from actual thickness to make 918 thousandths or type high, to compensate for slight variation in thickness of metal
and wood. If convenient, send a sample of metal to be mounted. An extra charge of Ic per square foot is made for
planing to gauge.
Laminated Backing is made of several laminations or plys of Birch wood, glued together. It is the highest grade of
backing obtainable. I s supplied in 24 x 36 inch panels, in various thicknesses, of 5 ply. See illustration and descrip-
tion on next page.
