fifty miles. The proposed 
fortifications of the canal 
will cost $12,500,000. The 
total estimated cost of the 
canal is $400,000,000. As 
many as 38,000 people 
kave been employed on 
the work at one time.

civil governor for the Pan- 
ama canal zone, on Jan. 
27, 1914, to take effect 
April 1, 1914.
