ciation, it being understood, however, that the money for the making
of such improvement shall be provided by the city.
Third.-The said city of Madison shafl, on or before November 1,
1912, cause the low or filled portion of Henry Vilas Park to be filled
by a filling of sufficient depth to leave the surface of said park, after
all settling has taken place, of sufficient height above the water line at
its ordinary stage to make said park sufficiently dry for park purposes
at all times of the year,* and shall also cause to be done whatever dredg-
ing may be necessary to complete the connection between Lake Wingra
and Lake Monona as originally planned by 0. C. Simonds, landscape
architect.
Fourth.-The city shall, on or before November 1, 1913, cause to be
constructed two appropriate bridges across the lagoon in said park, one
at the westerly and the other at the easterly end of same, to be located
as indicated in the design of said park prepared by Emil T. Mische.,
such bridges to be constructed of such material and of such design as
may be approved of by the directors of the Madison Park and Pleasure
Drive Association, or by the park board of said city, in case the work
of said association is transferred to such board; and said city shall
also cause to be constructed, on or before November 1, 1913, the road
or driveway around the outer edge of the island in said park as indi-
cated in the design of said park prepared by said Emil T. Mische.
Fifth.-It is my wish that the money which I hereby agree to con-
tribute on the conditions above named shall be used to meet the ex-
pense of acquiring said additional lands for said park which lie south
of the south line of Erin street extended, it being my understanding
that said sum is ample to meet the expense of acquiring said lands,
provided there is paid for the same a liberal but not exorbitant price.
ANNA M. VILAS.
After the reading of the letter the following resolution
was offered by Mr. Schubert and on motion was adopted
by rising vote:
Resolved, that the very generous gift offered to this association and
to the city by Mrs. Anna M. Vilas, of $25,000 for the purpose of se-
curing land for an addition to Henry Vilas Park, be accepted, on the
terms and conditions contained in a letter written by Mrs. Vilas to
John M. Olin, dated Madison, Wis., April 25 1910, and that the
thanks of this association be tendered to Mrs. Vilas for this liberal and
public-spirited act.t
The meeting then adjourned.
* This condition as to the dredging of the canal was subsequently withdrawn.
