This report makes it possible for the counties of Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette and Richland to maintain their designation as an "Economic Development District." This designation is made by the federal Economic Development Administration. This economic development report outlines a strategy for improving the region's economy during the coming year. Local officials from throughout the region were involved in the preparation of the document. The report lists the various public works and economic development projects that have been identified by the cities and villages as important to their local economic development efforts. In addition, the report assesses the Commission's economic development activities that have taken place during the past year, discusses the potentials and constraints to economic development in the region, and sets forth the goals of the development program for the coming year. The report also includes a chapter describing the changes that have taken place in the region's economy in recent years. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the local officials who responded to our survey in which we requested information on projects they will be working on during the next two to three years to promote their community's economic development. The response to that survey was very good and the results have been incorporated in the last chapter of the report. If your community is not included, please let us know and we will incorporate your projects in the annual update for 1997. We will be surveying communities again next spring and encourage all local officials to respond so that we may have a complete picture of development needs in the region. If we can be of assistance with any of your economic development needs, do not hesitate to give us a call at 342-1214.
