Dane County, Wis.
Dane County
Agricultural Agent
Located at the heart of one of America's
richest agricultural areas, Dane is one of the nation's
foremost agricultural counties.
In area the County is larger than the State
of Rhode Island. There are 5472 farms in the
County, the average size being 128.7 acres.
For years Dane County has ranked as one
of the nation's foremost agricultural counties. Com-
pared with other Wisconsin counties, Dane is first
in cropland, crops, farm income, income from all
livestock, income from all crops, number of cattle and
calves, number of chickens, egg production, milk pro-
duction, and in corn and oat production.
Variety characterizes the topography, scen-
ery, crops, and soils of Dane County.
The great sheet of ice which once covered
a large part of Southern Wisconsin is responsible for
this variety. The unglaciated area lying west of a
line running roughly from Sauk City at the North-
west through Cross Plains and Verona to Brooklyn
on the south is rugged, rough and scenic, wheras
the Central and Eastern parts of the County have
gentler slopes which give way at times to broad
areas of undulating prairie.
The county contains a great variety of soil
types and although the majority are of forest origin
there are sizeable areas of prairie soil.
