lowed the business .many years in the larger cities of Germany; was in London, Eng., three years, in Paris five years, and came to this comntry from Zurich, Switzer- land, in September, 1873. He worked in many of the large cities of this country previous to settliug in Rice Lake 14 years ago. He was married in 1883 to Miss Gartmann of Rice Lake, and they have a very pretty home and grounds near the lake, a picture of which is shown elsewhere. Mr. Abst has traveled much, and vis- ited the expsition in Paris in 1867, and again in 1889. He is author and publisher of "Der Sehneiderlehrling," a book for tailors' apprentices. He owns several houses here, and has done much toward building up and improving the city. AMBLE, KAREN, dressmaking, Main street, over Bow- ers' restaurant, has been in business a little more than one year and enjoys a fair patronage. AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY has an office in Demers' store, corner of Main and Eau Claire streets. W. A Demers, agent, has been in the employ of the company six years. He was born in Canada. Came to Wisconsin when four years old and has resided here 2S years. For five years he was employed in the station of the C., St. P., M. & 0. railway here, until his appointrment as agent for the express company. Mr. Demers is now serving his second term as city treasurer, the first term being in 1893-4. He is a member of the M. W. A., and is scre- tarV of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin.
