In 1932 this area also had the grasshopper plague for several
years. The grasshoppers were so numerous they had to be
sprayed with arsenic of lead which was furnished by Marathon
County upon the recommendation of the County Agent, William
J. Rogan.
In 1934 this area had the driest year that anyone can
remember. Farmers had to cut down trees and brush so their
cattle could survive. Many farmers with large herds moved
their cattle farther north where pastures were better andfamily
members stayed with them to milk and take care of them.
Another program that began in 1935 to help farmers do a
better job of farming, conserving soil and doing certain prac-
tices, and get cost sharing was the Agricultural Adjustment Act,
called AAA, later changed to Production Marketing Act called
PMA. Itis now known as Agricultural Stabilization and Conser-
vation Services called ASCS...
