      Gowdy and Goodell established this weekly October 8, 1885 and sold
it to Frank B. Hand during the following year. Until 1911 Hand conducted
it, when it was purchased by the present owner, Martin Vickers. Consolidated
with this Hurley paper are the following: Gogebic Iron Tribune, Iron County
Republican and the Iron County Citizen, all of them published in Hurley at
one time,

      Canned peas are the chief product of this Dodge county town. Other
important mainstays are brick cheese, Holstein cattle, creamery butter and
Phode Island Red and White Leghorn chickens.

      Founded November 21, 1908, by Willie Kaul, this country weekly is
today directed by its founder. The paper started as two-column folio, then
3-column, then 5-column, and then 6-column. The publisher has served suc-
cessively as justice of the peace the past 14 years, and has officiated
successfully as auctioneer for 14 years, completing a full course in all
branches at a national school of auctioneering seven vears ago; publisher
also studied law. Editor Kaul was scarcely 17 years when he established
the Hustisford News, while a junior student in the Juneau High School in
1908 and published the newspaper all alone during school hours and spare
