NOTE: I will only print small portions of the Venden Family due to the fact that the Venden
Family History was done into a complete book by Thora Skalet Gillette. Please refer to her
book if you have further questions about the Vendens. I have printed a story from Jean
Bower Amundsen about the Venden Farm in Norway, since she was there after the Venden
Book was completed.
GENERATION 2: Grandparents of Malla
Parents of Dorothea Marie (Malla) Venden (1-1)
MARTIN VENDEN was born Aug 25, 1856 in Etnedal, Valdres, Norway. He married
Olijanna Lille Solberg on January 3, 1881 in Norway. They emigrated to America in the fall
of 1881 settling in Monroe, Wisconsin, where they lived for six years. On May 18, 1887,
they moved to a farm in Vermont Township, just down the north side of the Vermont Church
Road hill. In 1911 they moved to Black Earth where he lived until his death on August 25,
1937, his 81st birthday. He was a carpenter by trade and helped build many of the buildings
in Black Earth, and nearby farms. He would often times walk up to the Skalet farm (about 2
miles from town) to have coffee at 3:00 in the afternoon, or to help with some work. His
funeral took place Saturday, August 28, 1937, at 2:00 p.m. from his home in Black Earth and
at 2:30 at the Vermont Lutheran Church with burial in the Vermont Cemetery. Rev. S.
Gunderson, officiated. Special songs were sung by Dora Brusveen and Gladys Kleppe of
Hollandale and by the Vermont ladies choir. The pallbearers were Sever Lee, Martin
Haugen, Henry Norslien, Ole Lukken, Melver Bordson, and Halsten Halsten. The funeral
was in large attendance with relatives and friends from Madison, Sun Prairie, York,
Cambridge, Blanchardville, Hollandale, and Poynette and many other places.
OLIJANNA LILE SOLBERG was born on Sept 19, 1855 in Etnadal, Valdres, Norway. She
died on January 25, 1927 in Black Earth. The following is her obituary from the Dane
County News: Although feeble for many years she always wanted to do her own work. She
was the kindliest spirit we have ever known. Always thoughtful of others , never
remembering her own suffering. She led a quiet and peaceful life and as quietly and
peacefully she passed away to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday morning at 8:00. She is
buried in the Vermont Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Martin and Olijanna had 6 children:
* 1. Dorothea Venden (Sever Skalet) 1881-1958 born in Valdres, Norway
2. Olava Venden (Charles Mohoney) 1883-1970 born in Wisconsin
3. Henry Venden (Gerharda Forshaug) 1885-1960 born in Wisconsin
(second marriage: Dorothea Iverson)
