[Commission of the state of Wisconsin to Henry Eggleston: May 3, 1861]
Alexander W. Randall. Governor of the State of Wisconsin. To all to whom these presents shall come, greeting: Know ye, that reposing special trust and confidence in the patiotism, fidelity and good conduct bof Henry J. Eggleston of Ripon I have appointed and constituted, and by these presents do appoint and constitute him Captain of Wis Ripon _________Wisconsin action Military with rank from May 3, 1861 and I do hereby authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the duties of that office according to law; and he is required to observe and follow such orders and directions as he shall from time to time received from the Commander-in-Chief; or any other his superior officer, according to the rules and discipline of war, and in accordance with the Constitution and Laws of this State. In testimony hereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and caused the Great seal of the State of Wisconsin to be afixed. Done at Madison, the third day of May in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and sixty-one. By the governor, L. P. Harvey, SEcretary of State acting as governor.
