LINES
(Above is Style NO. 6243 CLASS L - 4 LINE)
The use of wood type for display lines is unexcelled. The style
of wood type chosen for an illustration is able to build or d
stroy the reader's interest. For this reason, Hamilton has crea'
ed type faces which enable printers and layout men to have a
their disposal the correct type face neeedit stimulatei he in

This folder is printed directly from Hamilton wood type an
shows the printing quality of our type. The finishing materials
and high polish of the surface have great affinity for printing
ink and give a clean, sharp impression. To retain this quality
care should be used in cleaning. Wipe the type carefully with a
damp rag and avoid excess cleaning fluid that may cause the
ink to run down the sides. The hard maple endwood from which
our type is made is prepared by the most scientific methods over
a period of several months. While no wood can be guaranteec
against warping, Hamilton wood type, if given proper care will
remain accurate and give satisfactory service for years
How to igure LargerSizes
(Above is Style NO. 81 CLASS L - 4 LINE)
The size of each of the specimens of wood type in this folder is six line (72 points). Due to space
limitations it is impossible to show every character included in a complete font, but enough letters
and figures are shown to calculate the width of a line. For the same reason it is impossible to
show all the sizes for any one specimen. Practically all styles can be supplied as small as 3 or 4
line or larger in any multiple of one line (or pica).
Wood type is cut on end-wood maple on a pantagraph router. All dimensions increase or decrease
in the same ratio. For example, the total width of the 10 line cap H shown at the left is approxi-
mately 48 points. The total width of the 20 line letter is just double that, or 96 points. If it were
necessary to figure the width of the 15 line size, one half the width of the 10 line should be added.
The width or height of the stems increase in the same proportion. This build up is illustrated in
the example which shows a cap H in 10 and 20 line sizes of series 4006-L. The larger letter is
just twice the size of the smaller one but the total area covered and blackness of the 20 line let-
ter is four times that of the 10 line. This rate of expansion in width as well as height should al-
ways be kept in mind when ordering wood type in sizes larger than the specimens shown to as-
sure that the type will not be wider than expected.
4 Series No. 4006-L. Both height and total width of 20 line are twice those of 10 line.
