LELND STANFORD'S LAW OFFICE The Leland Stanford Office is at W East Main Street. The building was built by Stanford and used as his 3aw office when he practiced here before the Civil War. His failure to win the office of District Attorney here is believed to have been the reason for his departure for the We., w) he made a great fortune and founded Leland Stanford University i Palo Alti California. The building is of white brick, built on soping ground, three storiei in front with a porch to the second floor, and two stories in back. It hai very high windowp and doors and a brick parition running through the cento of the building after the manner of many o34 buildings in the eastern stat4 The interior woodwork is more elaborate than is customarly used today, bul most of the floors are of soft wood. After Stanford left Port Washington, several pioneer doctors used the building for their offices and living quarters. Most of the time it has been rented as apartments, but once it housed a laundry.,
