On the front cover is reproduced a picture of the oldest known forest plantation in Wis- consin. It was planted in 1876 by Mr.Walter Ware on the farm he then owned in western Waushara county. The planting commemorated the centennial of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The picture was taken in 1928 when the plan- tation was 52 years old. Barn timbers were sawed from logs cut in this plantation before it was 50 years old. Mr. Ware's observance of the centennial ex- emplifies the true spirit of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. While others looked backward, he built for the future, dem- onstrating that each man in his day and generation can do something worthy to be re- membered. I
