      Alfalfa has continued to prove that it is one of the best
 drought resisting crops and at the same time it is a valuable crop
 for the dairy farmer.
      In spite of the large amount of lime and marl that has been
produced in the last few years there is considerable land yet to
be limed and it has been important that liming materials be con-
tinued to be made available for those persons who wish to fit soil
for alfalfa growings
      The W.P..L lime and marl program was discontinued in Waupaoa
County on February 15, 1937. Since that time lime and marl pro-
duction and distribution has been continued on a private set-ups
      Continued work has been done to encourage the use of lime and
marl and co-operate with the organizations producing lime so that
farmers in the County would be able to secure the liming material
they need.
     Continued work is planned on this project with the possibility
of setting up soil testing stations throughout the County next year
where farmers can bring in their soil and see it tested as they
wait.
                  Windbreaks and Shelterbelts
     Since the original tiAer has been cut off a number of fields
in the light soil areas have been exposed to wind damage. The re-
duction in the number of trees in the County has also exposed farm
buildings to cold winds.
     Through the windbreak and shelterbelt planting program it is
hoped that protection can be given fields that need it and also
provide windbreaks for farm buildings to protect them against cold
winds and perhaps control the drifting of snow in farm yards.
     62,000 trees were distributed during the past year for win&-
break and shelterbelt planting. We have now orders for 29,000
Norway Spruce trees that will be used for this purpose when they
are distributed next spring.
     In addition, there will be further trees available through
the Wisconsin Conservation Department for distribution next spring
under the same plan that we secured the trees during the past year.
     It is hoped that in a few years time windbreaks and shelter-
belts will be planted in all places where this protection is needed.
