The Uninvited
In their seedy finery they sidle along the tables
there must be a dozen of them, all sizes, all ages.
Is it their out-of-fashion clothes, clean but
too long in the waist, too short at the ankle?
Is it their hair, straight and oily,
that lies in strings to their shoulders
or their eyes, small and close,
that never quite meet your own?
Is it the smile pasted on long faces,
exposing teeth chipped and rotting
that sets them there, forever lodged
in a corner of my mind?
They clutch tin plates to hollow chests,
empty stomachs their only offering
to the feast, their approach marked
by thunder ridged on the brows of our elders.
