demonstrating that democracy can organize itself without the necessity of
autocratic direction and control. If it should be proved that we can not
a saving in our foodstuffs by voluntary effort, and that as a result of our
failure to our country we are jeopardizing the success of the whole civilized
world in this war, it might be necessary for us to adopt such measures as
would force this issue-, but if we oome to that unhappy measure, we shall
compelled to acknowledge that democracy can not defend itself without com-
pulsion; that is autocracy, and is -a confession of failure of our political

this land w o can not deny himself or herself something? Who can not save
soie waste? Is net your right to life and freedom worth this service? 
Remember that the -situation is constantly changing. Watch for 
orders. Adapt your food habits to present needs.         Until the next 
Eat tess wheat. Reduce wheat consumptioa to the very minimum. 
Use instead corn, oats, rice, barley, and potatoes. 
Eat less meat. Use fish and other sea food, poultry, and rabbits 
instead of much pork and beef, because they can not be shipped in 
compact form like meat and are more perishable. Use beans, cheese, 
and nuts. 
Eat less fat.   Use all fats carefully. Waste none. We use and 
waste two and a half times as much fat as we need. 
Eat less sugar. If you eat half as much sweet as before you are 
still eating more than the Englishman or FPrnchman. 
Use milk freely. Do not waste a drqp. 
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. 
Do not hoard food. Hoarding food in households is both selfish 
and unnecessary. The Governmient is protecting the food -supply 
of its people. 
Remember that the requests of the Food Administration are for a 
minimum of saving. Do more if you can.
