DENAZIFICATION implemented these directives by "Zonal Executive Instructions No. 3 and 54." 1/ This differed in several important respects'from the Law for Liberation in the-U.S. Zone. There was no requirement for the registration of the population, the operation -was continued by German denazification commissions under the supervision of British Military Government, and the categories of Control Council Directive No. 38 were in- terpreted somewhat differently than under the Law for Liberation. British Military Government divided the program into two dist4not parts: One, the trial of war crimi- nals and members of the organizations found criminal by the International Military Tribunal; and two, the removal and exclusion from office of lesser Nazis. The tri- bunals for the trials of war crimes operated directly under British legal authorities and the denazification panels for the lesser incriminated operated under the British public safety office. The British program was ended officially in January 1948, when the British Military Governor announced that there would be no more removals from office under the denazificaticn program. The trials of members of the criminal organizations are continuing, and it is believed that the trials of all those persons now in intern- ment centers will be completed. While all persons in public office and important private positions were in- vestigated in the British Zone, it was possible for Nazis who held no position and who had applied for none to escape the screening and the application of sanctions.
