NOTES ON rTih AUTHOR idoice lianson Cook was born in 2lex'andria, Virginir.. if ter graduation from Northv. /stern Univarsity, she conducted research in German labor education as a Fellow of the Institute of International Education and the Alexaader von Huaboldt Stiftung. During her stay in Germany from 1929 to 1931, she attended the icadsmy of Labor (Akademie der irbeit) in Frankfurt, the Uni- versities at Frankfurt and Leipzig, and the Hoclhscaule fuer Politik in Berlin, As thosis on German labor education was prepared on the basis of her first- hand investigations. .Ors, Cook has t-aught at labor schools including the Bryn Meer Suzner School, the Southern Suumer School for workers, the Hudson Shore Labor School, and at educational institutes of various trade unions. She has served as educational director for the Industrial Unionaof Miarine and Shipbuilding Workers of America, the Txtle Workers Uaion of Clerica, and the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of 1smerica (a..ct In addition, she has taught classes for several local unions, the Philadelaphia Industrial Union Council, and for the iiliington Joint Education Co:..a.bttee of the CIO and the ML. She is now a member of the faculty of tihe LabQr Education Association of Philadelphia and a teacher at the Thiiladelphia Joint Board, ;'GlA, From 1940 to 1944, IMrs. Cook was editor of the "[~ial.uaaatud News", the organ of the Philadelphia Joint Board, ACA. Her writings include: "Workers Education in America" (co-author) in the "John Dewey Yearbook" (1942); "'orkers Educatio:L on the March"' in the April 1939 issue of the "na_:rican Teacher"; "Union Counselling} a. Manual for Teachers" - CIO Comrmunity Services Committee, 1944; and "Teaching I.Thnual for New MIlembers Courses and Leadership Training Courses"t, AC.v.., 1948. For three years Mlrs. Coo'lh served as chairman of the National Aicndemic Freedom1 Co.21.1ittee of the iaerican Federation of Teachers. She is a member of Local 3 of the tceiricnn Federation of Teachers, - 1 -
