Friedrich Bayer and Company, Lever-
kusen, was one of the two most
powerful chemical firms in Germany.
It pooled its assets with another
company in Ludwigshafen-and this
was the beginning of IG Farben,
although not until the merger of nine
firms in 1925 was the present fG born.
This, however, was the parent plant.
(below) Some of the 4 directors of the
IG Farben concerns. Geheimrat Her-
mann Schmitz was president of the
board of directors (Vorstand) of
Farben; Georg von Schnitzler was
commercial director of the division
which controlled all dye-stuffs, com-
mercial chemicals, and pharmaceu-
t1cals; Dr. Fritz ter Meer, an outstand-
ing scientist, was chief of the technical
board of the Vorstand. All these men
pictured-once so powerful in IG
Farben-are awaiting trial.
