LUTHER BURBANK-THE SUM OF HIS WORK WITH PLANT LIFE WHAT IT HAS MEANT TO SCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE E have seen that the first edition of W New Creations in Fruits and Flowers was published in June, 1893. Perhaps we can best give an idea of the impression created by the work by quoting a few paragraphs from the introduction to the supplementary brochure that was published the following year. Although this second work was issued independently, it consisted in the main of a fuller account of some of the plant developments referred to in the first work, together with a large number of photo- graphic illustrations. The two brochures, issued respectively in 1893 and 1894, may be considered as constituting the first official publication of the main outlines of the work in plant development which had begun in Massachusetts fully twenty- five years earlier, and which had occupied Mr. Burbank's attention unreservedly since 1885.
