SIDE from the unquestioned value of his
own personal researches, the world owes
much to Prof. Hugo de Vries of the Uni-
versity of Amsterdam in Holland. It was Prof.
de Vries who discovered the writings of the monk
Mendel and interpreted them to the world.
And it was Prof. de Vries, who through a char-
acteristic description of Luther Burbank's work
set in motion the train of thought which later
crystallized into The Luther Burbank Society, an
organization brought together for the express
purpose of making Mr. Burbank's life work avail-
able to the masses; an organization without which,
it is quite likely, the world for many generations
to come would never have profited by the labors of
the modest plant experimenter of Santa Rosa.
