The photographs and portraits of fish in this section are arranged in the order in which the species are presented in the text. Color photographs of museum specimens, it should be pointed out, are not a reliable guide to the colors of living fish; among several species-for example, the suckers, minnows, and drums-the scales often lose the silvery luster of living individuals and photo- graph in varying shades of yellow and brown.
