  249The Mineral Industry of
Maryland
This chapter has been prepared under a Memorandum of Understanding between
the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the Maryland Geological
Survey for collecting information on all nonfuel minerals.
By William Kebblish1
The value of Maryland's mineral production in 1979 totaled $193 million,
reflecting a substantial increase over the 1978 production value of $165
million. This overall increase was due to increases in both the production
and value of stone, sand and
gravel, and cement.
Stone and sand and gravel were the most valuable nonfuel mineral commodities
produced in the State, followed by~ portland and masonry cement; all contributed
significantly to the State's economy.
