Robert M. La Follette, 1884, at the age of 29 when he was first elected to the United States House of Representatives. During the two terms in office he continually opposed both the Senior Senator from Wisconsin, Philetus Sawyer, and powerful self-interest groups in his own district, actions which earned him his famous nickname, "Fighting Bob". A Democratic landslide in 1890 put him temporarily out of office.
