Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, c. 1840

The "new" Fort Crawford, built 1829-1835, from a painting by A. Brower, about 1840.

Located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, about two miles above the mouth of the Wisconsin River on the site of the present town of Prairie du Chien. The village of Prairie du Chien was first founded by the French about 1737. Fort Crawford was built in 1816 by the Rifle Regiment, abandoned in 1826, and re-garrisoned the next year and so continued until 1831 when it was abandoned in favor of a new fort in another part of town.
