about this site

The Wisconsin Academy Review is a quarterly publication of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters that has been published since 1954. It includes articles covering a broad range of styles and content, from scientific or literary, to short works of fiction and poetry, to reviews of recent publications, as well as numerous illustrations. Contributers to the publication all have a "Wisconsin connection."

This electronic text is a joint venture between the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters and the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections. The intent of the project is to produce a searchable full-text database of the contents of the Wisconsin Academy Review to be made available for public access through the Internet. At present, volumes spanning the years 1990 to 2000 of the Wisconsin Academy Review have been selected for conversion into electronic text format.

The printed text will be converted, using OCR software and manual correction and markup, to electronic text in the form of a TEI-compliant SGML file, which can be searched by the OpenText engine and made available through a basic interface.

Publications selected for this project are under Copyright © Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters [view Copyright statement].

Technical Note

Please note that full-text searching for the electronic texts in our collections is based on uncorrected OCR (Optical Character Recognition) results. While such text is often highly accurate, it will contain errors that may affect your search results. In particular, texts with the following characteristics are particularly prone to error (in some cases, accuracy for such texts is so low that we have decided not to attempt to provide full-text searching):

  • Hand-written texts;
  • Texts that contain diacritics;
  • Texts that contain non-Latin scripts;
  • Texts that contain obsolete characters (including the "long S" [looks like an "f"]);
  • Texts that are printed in a font in which the letters are difficult for the software to differentiate.
