Abstract:

Tax and assessment rolls for real and personal property. For real property, the rolls show name of owner, land description, assessed valuation, taxes and charges assessed, and amount paid. For personal property, the rolls provide name of owner, type and value of property, amount of taxes and charges assessed, and amount and date paid. Records are present for every fifth year only.

The records are available as original volumes, microfiche, or both -- dependent on the year and the locality (city, town, or village). Generally, tax rolls for 1910-1975 are available in original volumes; and tax rolls for 1980-2000 are available on microfiche only. The microfiche portion was produced by Sheboygan County.

The original volumes are arranged by locality and thereunder by year. They contain both real estate and personal property taxes (the latter are usually listed alphabetically by surname at the end of each volume). Within each volume real property data is usually arranged in one of two ways: for smaller communities -- by quarter section, then by block, and then by lot; for larger communities -- by subdivision, then by quarter section, then by block, then by lot. The names of the localities are listed by their current names. No difference has been noted for localities that changed from one level of government to another (for example: from village to city). A qualifier has been added when two localities with the same name exist at the same time, for example Plymouth (Town) and Plymouth (City).

The microfiche portion of the collection dates from 1980 to 2000. It is arranged by year, then by tax type (real estate or personal property), and thereunder by locality. There is some overlap between the original volumes and the microfiche for the years 1980 and 1985. Records for the year 1980 are complete with the exception of the city of Sheboygan personal property tax rolls (however, the original volume is available). The 1985 real estate tax rolls on microfiche are missing several localities as are 1985 personal property tax rolls. The years 1990 and 2000 are complete -- missing only the city of Sheboygan personal property tax rolls for 1990. There is no fiche for 1995. The original volumes are at the Sheboygan County Treasurer's Office

Records are present for every fifth year only. The records for the years that don't end in “0” or “5” can be found at the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center.
