Biography/History

Frank Place was born in 1880. He organized and served as president of the Tramp and Trail Club of New York, and co-founded the New York-New Jersey Conference to develop the Appalachian Trail in those states. Place co-authored The New York Walk Book with Raymond H. Torrey. He died in 1959.

Scope and Content Note

This scrapbook collection of trail clippings, compiled by Frank Place, consists of news items and articles from newspapers and magazines pertaining to walking and hiking trails. Also included are some poems about walking. Most of the clippings are from New York and New Jersey newspapers, primarily from The New York Times and The Evening Post. Articles about walking written by Place are included, as are clippings from a weekly column called "The Long Brown Path" by Raymond H. Torrey which appeared in The New York Evening Post.

The American Geographical Society (AGS) donated these scrapbooks to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries in 1978 as part of its entire map and library collections.
