Abstract:

The National Wetlands Inventory records, dating from February 1971 to November 1997, consist of primarily Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and selected records from Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Texas, as well as a few Midwestern military base locations. Most folders consist of an aerial photo transparency from National High Altitude Photography (NHAP) and the National Aerial Photography Program (NAPP) and the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) original delineations taped over each photo drawn on Mylar. Included in most folders is a USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle. In some cases, there are notes related to the creation of the NWI map on separate paper. In other cases, the notes are made on the topographic quadrangles themselves.

The National Wetlands Inventory records include photo-transparencies, the subsequently created wetland maps, and other documents utilized in the creation of the National Wetland maps.

This collection includes photos, maps, and notes from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and selected records from Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Texas, as well as a few Midwestern military base locations.

Each folder was left in its original order as received from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The folders are arranged in boxes alphabetically by state and then alphabetically by name of the 1:100,000 quadrangle. Each folder houses one quarter of a 1:100,000 quadrangle. An index is included with each folder showing its location.

Custodial History

Materials from this collection were gathered and kept by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since the initiation of the National Wetland Inventory project.

Acquisition Information

Brian Huberty, Region 3 NWI Coordinator Ecological Services, facilitated the transfer of these materials from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in St. Petersburg, Florida to the American Geographical Society Library in January-February 2007 and February 2008. Additional packets were received in June 2008.

Processing Information

Ryan Parker, AGSL Student Intern, processed the collection at the AGSL from January-June 2007 and February-March 2008. Ryan Parker and Angie Cope created a finding aid for the collection in March 2008.
