The collection consists of a single scrapbook documenting Herbert L. Warner's work on the construction of the Alaskan-Canadian (ALCAN) Highway from 1943 to 1945. Included are photographs, newspaper articles, and miscellaneous personal documents.

Biography/History

Herbert L. Warner, who was born August 5, 1900, worked on the Alaska-Canadian Highway (ALCAN) from 1943 to 1945. This highway was constructed as part of the war effort during World War II to connect Alaska to the lower 48 states. Warner was a civilian but lived on an army base. He held several different jobs during his lifetime, including engineer, stevedore, and mechanic. Orginally sent to Skagway, Warner travelled to other areas of Alaska as well and photographed of these places.

Scope and Content Note

This scrapbook contains numerous photographs documenting construction of the Alaska-Canadian Highway and life in various small towns. Also included are clippings from local newspapers and Warner's correspondence with the military documenting his travels, work, and personal life.

The American Geographical Society (AGS) donated these scrapbooks to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries in 1978 as part of its entire map and library collections.


Processing Information

Preliminary processing was done by AGSL. Bob Jaeger (supervised by Christel Maass, UWM Libraries' Archives Dept.) completed processing in August 2009.
