Series 765
|
Part 1 (Series 765): Original Collection, 1928-19778.6 cubic feet (7 records center cartons, 4 archives boxes, and 1 flat box) Applications not only include Wisconsin residents, but also individuals from other states who wished to compete in Wisconsin. Fred Saddy's files (approximately one cubic foot of records) include correspondence pertinent to his position in Wisconsin and also letters pertaining to his leadership in the National Boxing Association, particularly his tenure as chair of its Ratings and Suspension Appeal committees. The NBA correspondence includes exchanges with Commissioner Abe J. Greene and presidents Tony Petronella and Louis R. Radzienda about internal association matters, the general condition of the sport, growing public alarm about the health implications of boxing, and the matches of individual boxers. One letter from Greene contains a letter to Red Buttons criticizing the comedian's depiction of a “punch drunk” fighter. There are also exchanges with other state athletic commissions, sportswriters such as George A. Barton, and various international boxing officials. Several files concern injured or suspended boxers such as Ezzard Charles; Willie Pep; and Jackie Darthard, who died after a match in Milwaukee. The NBA is also documented by minutes of national conventions (1934, 1937-1940) and the January 14, 1956 executive committee meeting and a 1955 audit. Wisconsin club reports include annual applications for boxing matches and exhibitions, physicians' reports, bonds, and information on proceeds. The post-1970 club reports frequently include printed programs. : Applications are arranged alphabetically by type and chronologically thereunder.
