Container Title
Series: Section Three, 1940-1989
Physical Description: 20.3 c.f. (49 archives boxes, 2 card file boxes, and 1 oversize folder), 1 reel of microfilm (35 mm), 44 films, and 1 videotape
Scope and Content Note

Section Three contains scattered items from the 1940s to the 1960s, but most of the material dates from the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is organized as Personal Files, Motion Pictures, Writings and Interviews by de Antonio, Subject Files, Materials Submitted, and Artifacts. Again researchers should note that these materials overlap those in the two portions of the collection processed earlier. In searching for a topic, the researcher should consult all three sets of container lists.

There exists a large number of unprocessed de Antonio tape recordings, many of which belong with the various transcripts included in this section. Researchers should consult the list of unprocessed tapes, in the appendix at the end of this register, when searching for materials related to the various interviews.

PERSONAL FILES in Section Three begin with a group of Biographical Materials. These include numerous interviews with de Antonio and miscellaneous items like passports, address books, and a letter from de Antonio's father to the filmmaker's mother, dated 1940. Following Biographical Materials is Correspondence, most of which dates from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Among the more extensive exchanges are those with de Antonio's sister-in-law Madeline de Antonio, Wisconsin filmmaker Glenn Silber, and authors Mitch Tuchman and Peter von Bagh. Silber's file includes his script titled The Secret That Exploded (1982). Correspondence with Tuchman does not include materials on the Painters Painting book, which Tuchman edited (these materials are filed in the Motion Pictures category). Among the other correspondents are Daniel Talbot, head of New Yorker Films, de Antonio's U.S. distributor; and artist Kazuko Oshima. Legal files include transcripts of cases both involving de Antonio himself and those which were of interest to him. Materials on American Friends Service Committee et al. v. William Webster et al. (FBI files destruction case) include a tape recording of an interview between de Antonio and the plaintiffs' lawyer, Marshall Perlin. Financial Materials include correspondence with de Antonio's accountants, detailed documentation of the filmmaker's tax payments, and some materials from his late wife, Terry Brook de Antonio.

The MOTION PICTURES category is organized alphabetically by film title. In general, each film file begins with correspondence, followed by production materials, then publicity, reviews, legal files, and finally financial materials, including distribution and earning statements. Most films made prior to 1977 are sparsely documented in these additions. Materials on the unproduced Inside the Company include an interview with former CIA agent Philip Agee. The most extensive files concern In the King of Prussia (1982). Files on this film include correspondence with Daniel and Philip Berrigan; documentation of de Antonio's efforts to raise funds for the production; the transcript of an interview conducted by de Antonio with actor Martin Sheen, made in 1982; and materials related to the various international film festivals where the film was shown. Files for In the Year of the Pig contain financial materials for Monday Films. The Painters Painting files include transcripts of interviews with most of the art world figures shown in the film. Most of these interviews are filed under “Outtakes” and are arranged alphabetically by name. Also among the Painters Painting files are materials concerning the book made from the film, including manuscripts and correspondence with editor Mitch Tuchman. In the Rush to Judgment materials are logs of newsreel footage used in the film, and transcripts of newsreels. Files on Underground include correspondence with de Antonio's collaborators Haskell Wexler and Mary Lampson; some publications by the Weather Underground organization; and legal materials concerning the grand jury subpoenas issued during the making of the motion picture. The Miscellaneous Films grouping contains material covering many different motion pictures made by de Antonio. Here are filed catalogues from his U.S. distributor, New Yorker Films, as well as documentation from retrospectives at international film festivals.

In WRITINGS AND INTERVIEWS BY DE ANTONIO there are reviews and short articles written by the filmmaker, along with transcripts of interviews with others, conducted by de Antonio. Among the interviews are transcripts of a talk with artist Frank Stella, published in the magazine GEO; and a discussion with former FBI agent Wesley Swearingen, conducted with Warren Hinckle for an article in Rolling Stone.

SUBJECT FILES are arranged alphabetically. They contain information of interest to de Antonio as well as materials concerning his various activities. Here there is documentation on The Film Collective, an organization of independent filmmakers which de Antonio helped to found in the early 1980s.

MATERIALS SUBMITTED TO DE ANTONIO include scripts, film proposals, articles, and other materials given to de Antonio for his information, inspection, or his aid in publication or production. Film Proposals and Scripts are arranged alphabetically by title. Miscellaneous Writings include a manuscript of the novel Soldier by James Killgallon and John Joyce (1982), and several pieces by Mitch Tuchman. Among the Magazines are publications concerning film, art, and politics, many of which are rare or no longer published. Books are arranged alphabetically by author, and many of them contain dedications to de Antonio from their writers. Some books, such as Mark Lane's Rush to Judgment, were used in making de Antonio's films. Among the books is Jack Kerouac's text (1959) for the film Pull My Daisy -- the film which influenced de Antonio to begin making motion pictures.

Among the ARTIFACTS are hand-made gift boxes given to de Antonio by artist Kazuko Oshima.
