Richard F. Hanser Papers, 1952-1969

Scope and Content Note

The Richard F. Hanser papers, 1952-1969, include biographical materials and records of three television series -- Victory at Sea, Project XX, and The Wisdom Series. The television material is arranged chronologically by air date.

The biographical material is arranged chronologically and includes NBC publicity releases on Hanser, clippings, and a memo from Hanser to participants in a University of Denver seminar on documentary writing.

The Victory at Sea (1952-1953) records include narrations for all 26 episodes of the series. There are also miscellaneous materials relating to a motion picture and a book, both titled Victory at Sea and based on the series. A copy of the book, Victory at Sea: The Submarine, can also be found here.

The Project XX series (1954-1969) is documented by background information, press comments, NBC episode descriptions, and educational brochures. But the greater part of the documentation of the series, and indeed of the collection, consists of materials from 24 episodes of Project XX. These episodes span a fifteen-year period. There are scripts for each program and extensive notes for many of them; research, production and publicity materials supplement the scripts and notes.

The Wisdom Series (1952-1957) was produced by the Project XX unit but aired independently. The collection contains materials from five segments of this series.

Received with the Hanser collection were 17 disc recordings. They include soundtrack recordings for various Project XX episodes as composed and conducted by Robert Russell Bennett.
