Papers of an editor, film critic, and free-lance writer, consisting of correspondence, research material, scripts and drafts, and printed copies of books, articles, and reviews. Bulking largest is material for three books, Lena (1965), The Opulent Era (1968), and The Disney Version (1968). Documentation for the last title is unusually complete and includes correspondence, research material on various Disney operations, and interviews with Walt Disney and members of his staff. Also included are a children's book and an unpublished novel and novel fragment. Coverage of Schickel's shorter writings is less full, although there are some film reviews for Show, articles written for various other publications, and television scripts for Sunday, and Early Chaplin, a WNBC-TV series. A limited correspondence file contains a few personal items and letters of reaction to his reviews and articles; among the prominent correspondents are Leonard Bernstein, Richard Burton, Alexander Calder, James T. Farrell, Fred W. Friendly, Jerry Lewis, Karl A. Menninger, Leontyne Price, Robert Redford, Peter Sellers, and Kurt Vonnegut. The balance of the collection is made up of research and promotional material.
