Scope and Content Note

The Aronson Papers document, to varying degrees, the three phases of his professional career: his early years as a working reporter and columnist with the establishment press, his co-founding and editing of the National Guardian, and his years as a teacher of journalism and free-lance writer. His early career is only minimally documented by printed newspaper stories, with more comprehensive information concerning his work in establishing a democratic press in post-World War II Germany. His years as a teacher and writer are extensively represented by personal and professional correspondence, speeches, writings, and teaching materials. The papers from his years at the National Guardian are probably incomplete.

The ill feelings that surrounded Aronson's resignation from the National Guardian in 1967 leaves in doubt the status of the paper's records dating from 1948 to that year. It is not clear how many of the records Aronson took with him in 1967 and what happened to the records left in the office. It is known that Aronson did not take the paper's reference library with him, for those records arrived at the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1968 and were eventually catalogued as part of the Guardian records, a separate collection. Researchers interested in the early history of the National Guardian should consult the library records, for they contain information about many organizations and subjects on which the paper reported and about its contacts with its foreign correspondents. A limited quantity of Aronson's correspondence is also included.

It is likely that the National Guardian records that came to the Historical Society as part of the Aronson papers are incomplete. In 1968 Aronson told the Archives that he had “3-4 cartons” of newspaper records in his possession; in 1973 he indicated that he planned to donate “two file cabinets” of records. In 1986 he stated that he had “salvaged seventeen cartons” of records from the National Guardian offices.

In 1989 the Archives received 45 cubic feet of papers from the Aronson estate, and after receiving a second small accession in 1992 the Archives learned that all papers had been donated. However, the National Guardian records in the processed collection do not meet even the “3-4 cartons” description. What is included in the Aronson papers is a modest quantity of material about the paper's organization in 1948 and its turbulent history during the 1950s and 1960s. The departure of business manager Russ Nixon and Aronson's own resignation are also covered and some staff memoranda provide insights into the internal dissension during the Aronson years. However, many important topics and prominent correspondents are missing. There is, for example, only scant contemporary material about the National Guardian's defense of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and Alger Hiss; with the limited material on these topics in the collection dating from after 1967 when Aronson left the paper. There is also virtually no information on the paper's always-precarious financial condition or its relationship with its readers. And while there are extensive exchanges with foreign correspondents and with Cedric Belfrage after he was deported, there is little information on contacts with its American writers.

The incomplete nature of the National Guardian files is also apparent in the absence of correspondence with prominent individuals known to have been supporters of the newspaper such as Paul Robeson and W.E.B. Du Bois. Internal evidence suggests that the correspondence with Robeson was extensive, but only a few items are included here. (During processing it was learned that Aronson donated two boxes of his correspondence with Du Bois to the University of Massachusetts Amherst.)

The missing material about the early years of the newspaper was also not part of the Guardian records that were separately donated to the Historical Society in 1993 when its publication ceased. The volume of these records totaled only seven cubic feet, and they pertain almost entirely to the post-Aronson years.

The likely conclusion is that Aronson took some editorial files of the National Guardian records with him when he resigned. Some or all of these records he possessed were donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society. What records Aronson left in the office, except for the reference library, were probably discarded by the Guardian.

The Aronson Papers consist of four series: CORRESPONDENCE, SPEECHES AND WRITING, PHOTOGRAPHS and AUDIO RECORDINGS. As received, the collection included a fourth type of documentation: reference files, which were approximately half of the accession. Unlike the reference library in the Guardian collection, which concerned politics and social justice, these reference files entirely concerned journalism. In addition to generally available newspaper sources, Aronson clipped from media sources such as Editor and Publisher, Columbia Journalism Review, Nieman Reports, and publications of the Center for Freedom of Information at the University of Missouri to facilitate his research and teaching. Aronson's reading on China primarily came from English-language sources such as the Beijing Review, China Daily, Xinhua Weekly, New China, and U.S. China Review. Because these sources are widely available, the clippings were not retained. The few remaining reference files were added to the correspondence series.

The CORRESPONDENCE series, which consists of memoranda and other forms of documentation, as well as correspondence, is arranged alphabetically by personal or organizational name and by subject. In addition to the previously described files, there are materials about the origins of the National Guardian and correspondence with Anita McCormick Blaine, Anne Eaton, Corliss Lamont, and other supporters and with publisher Josiah W. Gitt. Correspondence with Cedric Belfrage, the “editor in exile” after his deportation, is particularly strong, for their personal letters often discussed internal matters. Aronson also maintained a lifelong contact with many journalists and foreign correspondents who wrote for the paper during his editorship: among the most notable are Anne Bauer, Louis E. Burnham, Wilfred Burchett, Emil Carlebach, Alexander L. Crosby, Julio Alvarez del Vayo, Tabitha Petran, Judy Polumbaum, John G. Roberts, Phyllis Rosner, Anna Louis Strong, Ursula Wasserman, Konni Zilliacus, and Ed Zusi. In addition to correspondence, the files pertaining to these individuals frequently include drafts of news stories, some possibly unpublished. Similar material can be found in the reference files in the Guardian collection.

As both a working and academic journalist, Aronson's correspondents included individuals from both aspects of the field such as Irving Dilliard, Nat Hentoff, Lawrence Pinkham, Mark Pinsky, and David Wesley and with the staff of professional publications such as the Antioch Review, In These Times, Monthly Review, and the New York Times. During the third phase of his career, Aronson's contacts with journalists far outnumbered his contacts with left-leaning political activists.

China is an important subject of Aronson's correspondence. Not only did he correspond with numerous “old China hands,” such as Israel Epstein and Elsie Cholmeley, William Worthy, and Julian Schuman, but after his teaching experience in China he maintained contact with former students. Prominent among them were the activist Li Lu, and Chen Lung of the New China News Agency. In addition, Aronson carefully kept copies of the letters he wrote in China in 1979 and 1981. He later relied on these files, as well as on his wife's diaries, in writing and speaking about their experiences in China.

Aronson's SPEECHES AND WRITINGS, which are present in both printed and draft form, contain additional information about his experiences as editor of the National Guardian, a teacher in China, and a critical observer of the media. The series is arranged alphabetically by genre and includes articles, books, speeches, and lectures. The chapter drafts of Aronson's book about China is particularly valuable, as the manuscript was never published. The Press and the Cold War does not include drafts, but there is correspondence that reveals the strenuous effort Aronson put into the book's promotion.

The PHOTOGRAPHS series contain pictures of Aronson, Belfrage and Burchett as well as from the 1945 German newspaper conference at Marburg, view of the National Guardian office, artwork from a special issue of the National Guardian and other miscellaneous images.

The AUDIO RECORDINGS series contain 118 audio tapes, primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. They include a recording of the National Guardian's 5th anniversary event in 1953 at which W.E.B. DuBois and Ring Lardner Jr. spoke. Pete Seeger performed “If I Had a Hammer” and a song about newspapermen he wrote for the event. There is also a long interview with Sidney Rittenberg, who had contacts with many Chinese leaders. The other tapes were only minimally identified by the donor, but they are known to include recordings of broadcasts on WBAI; class lectures delivered at Hunter, primarily for Aronson's “Press and the Public” class (1980); lectures by David Deitch, Tom Johnson, and other guest lecturers (circa 1971-1972); and remarks by Aronson and others at various media-related conferences. Recordings made in China, some of which are labeled only in Chinese characters, probably consist of lectures, interviews, and radio broadcasts.
