American Council on Pharmaceutical Education Records, 1937-1991

Scope and Content Note

There are two series: BACKGROUND MATERIALS and COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS OF PHARMACY. The collection consists almost entirely of the standardized report forms concerning the undergraduate accreditation program, along with a small amount of correspondence, special reports, and miscellaneous school program materials. Some files do not contain every kind of form, and almost all the sets are chronologically incomplete.

The BACKGROUND MATERIALS include various editions of both the lists of accredited colleges and schools, and the Accreditation Manual, containing articles of incorporation, by-laws, accreditation policies and procedures, standards and guidelines, and self-study guide. The Miscellany folder includes a historical summary of all pharmaceutical education programs up to 1961, compiled by the NABP.

The COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS OF PHARMACY series is arranged according to the Council's accreditation list. It is alphabetical by state, thereunder by school, then by type of record. If the school's name was changed during the time period included in the collection, this is noted. Many schools are not represented by every kind of form, and most of the sets have missing years.

The ACPE Reports (1938, 1949-1977) are the only records in the collection issued by the Council itself. They are the final council reports of the on-site visits by the ACPE accreditation team. Not included are the preliminary reports by the team to the Council.

The Annual Progress Reports (1939-1975), which update the Council on current status of the college including any changes between accreditation visits, are listed with inclusive dates.

The Applications for Examination, produced by the institution in preparation for an on-site evaluation, date from 1938 to 1941, then none until 1949, after the war. They include information on finances, professional teaching staff, instructional load, enrollment and admissions, curriculum, student load, and library facilities. Although noted in the container list under this title, the form has had several titles and some minor format changes. These titles are listed below, with years included in the collection:

  • Application for Accreditment, 1938-1941
  • Application for Accreditation or Continuation of Accreditation, 1949-52
  • Application for Examination, 1953-1969
  • Questionnaire for Examination, 1970-1976
  • Questionnaire for Evaluation and Administrative Summary, 1978-1984
  • Administrative Summary and Questionnaire, 1985-1990

The Self-Studies, which have accompanied the Applications for Examination from about 1966, include both quantitative and qualitative information. Often they include attachments, supplemental data and appendices.
