Initially established in 1946 as the Foreign Policy Association in Milwaukee, the organization changed its name to the World Affairs Council during the 1950's in response to charges that the national Foreign Policy Association had “leftist tendencies”. This followed a national trend of establishing autonomous councils using the Association as a resource.
