Scope and Content Note

The UW--Madison Archives collection of Mr. Leopold's writings (published and unpublished), related correspondence, and working papers is unusually complete. Materials in this series, most of which were originally in Mr. Leopold's personal files, were deposited by various members of the Leopold family and by the UW Department of Wildlife Ecology.

The first nine boxes of the series pertain to publications, although only Boxes 001-002 contain actual published materials (reprints or clippings). Boxes 003-006 contain correspondence and miscellaneous materials pertaining to publication of Mr. Leopold's four books, copies of which are readily available. Correspondence and working papers for the Report on a Game Survey of the North Central States and Game Management may be found in the species and subject files (9/25/10-4). In Boxes 007-009 are working papers, including correspondence, notes, and drafts, for a number of Mr. Leopold's published articles, reprints of which may be found in Boxes 001-002. Working papers relating to other published items may be found scattered throughout the collection; an attempt has been made in the folder list to identify them where they occur (see also Boxes 016-018 in this series.)

Boxes 010-018 contain mostly unpublished materials, including drafts of Mr. Leopold's proposed book on Southwestern game (Box 010); his state game survey reports (Boxes 010-011); working papers for research manuscripts which were not published (Boxes 012-013); digests, lectures, course materials, notes, and other miscellaneous items (Boxes 013-015); manuscripts, mostly unpublished, which Mr. Leopold kept in his desk (Boxes 016-017); and superseded drafts collected by Dr. Robert McCabe (Box 018).

This series also includes three large folios: one contains a nearly complete set of the Pine Cone , a game bulletin edited by Mr. Leopold and others, 1915-1931; the second contains charts of bird song phenology data for a paper Mr. Leopold intended to write; the third contains original illustrations by artist Byron Jorns, who worked together with Leopold on a series of wildlife management features for the Wisconsin Agriculturalist and Farmer .

Mr. Leopold almost always wrote with pencil on yellow lined paper (PY). After finishing an article or essay he would put it in his "cooling drawer" for several days or weeks, then ask various friends or students for a critical reading, rework it, and have it typed on yellow paper (TY) for further criticism and revision (TYR). A paper might go through several typed yellow drafts before it was finally considered finished and the order given, "Go to white" (TW). Even then it might be further revised (TWR). Exceptions include a few original drafts written in ink on white paper (ink W) and a few final drafts, prior to about 1928, typed on yellow paper.

Note: Notebook of materials relating to wildlife food and cover plants, donated in 1985 by Douglas Wade, a graduate student under Leopold in the 1930s. Note: Holds unpublished manuscripts related to wildlife censuses in the Prairie du Sac area and a bound volume of Leopold's "digests." From 1941 to 1944 AL and Paul Errington attempted to collaborate on a paper analyzing the results of the Prairie du Sac wildlife census, which dated back to 1929. There were probably four drafts each by AL and Errington, alternating with each other. The final result was a version published by Errington alone in Ecological Monographs (January 1945), "Some contributions of a 15 year local study of the northern bobwhite to a knowledge of population phenomena." Only AL's drafts are in the UW-Madison Archives, along with some related correspondence. See also other Prairie du Sac correspondence and records in 9/25/10-5, Box 005.

AL's WLE 118 was a memorable and influential course for many UW students, a number of whom (like Grant Cottam) became prominent ecologists.

Writings: Unpublished Manuscripts -- AL's Desk File

View digitized contents of this box.

Note

Contains some 200 unpublished manuscripts and fragments found in AL's desk file at the time of his death. Some manuscripts contain ideas which he wanted to set down for possible future use. The manuscripts span years from 1917 to 1948, though several are undated. Portions of the material appeared in revised form in AL's published work, including Round River . Also included are articles, speeches, seminar papers, reports, essays, and fragments on the diverse interests of a lifetime.

After AL's death, these manuscripts were sent to Dr. A. Starker Leopold, who inherited his father's library. On 18 Sept. 1967, Starker Leopold deposited the entire corpus in the UW-Madison Archives. An attempt has been made to arrange the manuscripts according to subject and chronology; a bibliography is included in the box. Titles are self-explanatory (see below).

Items indented were stapled or clipped with the items they follow. The numbers associated with most of th eitems correspond with the numbered items in box 17.

Note

Most of the manuscripts in AL's desk file (Box 016 in this series) were typewritten by Patricia Murrish, secretary of the UW Department of Wildlife Management, in the summer of 1948 before the originals were sent to Berkeley. Two sets have been deposited in the UW-Madison Archives: one by Mrs. Leopold, consisting of two volumes bound in random order; and the other by Luna Leopold, consisting of individual stapled ribbon copies.

A bibliography has been prepared from the order of typescripts in the bound volumes. Each item is assigned a number that appears on the unbound typescripts as well; these copies have been arranged in the same numerical order and are keyed to the bibliography in Folder 001. Each folder in Box 017 holds 40 manuscripts; some are labeled "unfinished" as opposed to "unpublished," but there is no apparent significance to this difference in titles.

Writings: Early Drafts, Xerox Copies

View digitized contents of this box.

Note

This box contains photocopies of AL's superseded drafts, 1940-48, which Robert McCabe had AL's secretaries save for him. McCabe lent the originals to the UW-Madison Archives for xeroxing. McCabe became a student of AL's in 1939 and realized immediately that the professor was an uncommonly skilled writer whose early drafts would be of literary value. Many of these drafts are of AL's "literary essays" (his term), which were written mainly in the 1940s.

Many of the PY drafts from which the copies have been made were already considerably revised by AL. The original versions of changes made by crossing out and by insert slips are easily traceable. However, AL also made revision by erasure and cut-and-paste; these revisions make it impossible to trace the original version, and it is difficult to detect such changes on the xerox copies as well.

The dates recorded in these entries are those on the drafts themselves. The letter 'T' after a date signifies that this is the secretary's notation of the date typed, which is not necessarily the date of composition. Additional information included in the entries, while by no means complete, indicates what became of various manuscripts, especially if published or filed with AL's unpublished manuscripts.

Original pencil drafts of other AL manuscripts, particularly research manuscripts, may be found in other boxes of this series and scattered throughout the collection (see bibliography in this box). A few manuscripts may remain in the possession of other individuals. See folder titles in Box 018 for years and topics covered.

folio 1 (F01)
Writings: NMGPA Pine Cone (pub)

View digitized contents of this folder.

Note

Contains issues of the Pine Cone publication. The Pine Cone was an official quarterly newspaper of the New Mexico Game Protective Association (the first issue was published by the Albuquerque GPA before the state organization was established). The paper was apparently founded in December 1915 by AL, when he was secretary of the Albuquerque and New Mexico GPAs, and modeled on the earlier Carson Pine Cone . Its aim was to promote the protection and the enjoyment of wildlife, encourage efficient game wardens, and campaign for wildlife refuges. Most of the writing was apparently done by AL and Ward Shepard, but in 1953 correspondence Mr. Shepard noted that he was unable to distinguish authorship except in a few cases (which he did not mention).

Unless Mr. Shepard's file is still in existence, this folio may be the most complete (and perhaps the only) remaining set. The set seems to lack only three issues. Included are issues for Christmas 1915 (first issue); April, July, and October 1916; July (8th issue) and October 1917; January and April 1918; January, February, and July (14th issue) 1919; March, July, and December 1920; March 1924; and July 1931 (19th issue).

Writings: Bird Song Charts

View digitized contents of this folio.

Note

Forty charts (penciled data on 18" x 22" graph paper) and ten figure tracings for a paper AL intended to write on daybreak and evening birdsong phenology. The charts apparently represent the results of observations on some 800 mornings and 160 evenings in Madison and at the Shack, mostly 1944-47. See also the journals and phenology records (9/25/10-7, Boxes 002 and 003; 9/25/10-8, Box 002).

In 1943-44, AL started writing his ideas about birdsong phenology; about three manuscripts totaling 60 pages may be found in Box 018 above. Another 70 pages of miscellaneous working papers were not xeroxed; originals are in the files of Robert McCabe. In 1961 Alfred Eynon published a paper, "Avian daybreak and evening song in relation to time and light intensity," in which he listed AL's field data and manuscripts.

folio 3 (F03)
Writings: Byron Jorns Drawings
Note

Contains original illustrations by Byron Jorns which accompanied AL's text in the series of articles on farm wildlife for the Wisconsin Agriculturalist and Farmer . Each illustration has a descriptive title, and its dimensions are noted (see below). All are in black and white pen and ink except for #016, which is light brown pastel.

The original illustrations were not in the UW Archives as of January 2008. The Archives does retain a set of negatives from photographs that had been taken of these illustrations. To view some of these drawings, search on "Jorns" under "Search Photographs" on the home page.
