Scope and Content Note

The collection documents the actions of Fast for Life from Gray's first conception of the idea though successful completion of a forty-day fast (beginning August 6, 1983) by Gray and others, followed by extensive analysis of the outcome. Included is a final report written by Gray and co-faster Dorothy Granada; early organizing files; minutes of meetings; newsletters; a guide to political fasting written by Gray; collected articles about nuclear weapons and war; open letters to world leaders; written and recorded poetry and prayer services; domestic and foreign media files containing articles about the fast and fasters, interviews, and press releases; extensive correspondence with supporters; a file card index documenting support actions around the world; evaluations of the fast and its effectiveness; and tape recorded radio interviews and programs.
