Abstract:
Records of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES), an organization formed in October 1980 in response to growing public opposition to U.S. intervention in Central America, particularly El Salvador. Its members are civic organizations, church groups, legal aid and other solidarity groups, with over 300 chapters in 48 states. The goals of CISPES are: to educate and mobilize public opinion to prevent U.S. intervention in the region and to build support for the broad, political-military opposition in El Salvador, the FMLN/FDR (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front/Democratic Revolutionary Front). The collection documents the activities of the chapters and work committees, including grassroots educational campaigns in schools, churches, and communities; legislative lobbying, and petition and letter-writing campaigns to exert pressure on public officials to change U.S. policy towards Central America; raising funds for medical supplies and equipment to be sent to FMLN zones of control in El Salvador; and mobilizing rallies, demonstrations, and other protest activities at national, regional, and local levels.
