Draper organized the bulk of the collection prior to commencing the actual writing of his book, King's Mountain and Its Heroes, which was published in 1881, one year after the centennial of the event. Correspondence with descendants discusses the Battle of King's Mountain and also comments on the War of 1812; Indian relations, especially with the Cherokee and the Chickasaw; the Civil War; and Reconstruction. In addition to the officers' papers he acquired, there are pension statements; letters; and other biographical documentation about many of the officers and soldiers; diaries, reports, and reminiscences by representatives from both sides; and topographical studies of the battle area. Also included are notes, draft chapters, correspondence, memos, and newspaper and periodical reviews for Draper's publication.
