Scope and Content Note

PH 5072 includes photographs illustrating the general history of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Included are interior and exterior views of facilities and building construction, programs and activities, historic sites, and museum exhibits. There are also formal and candid photographs of staff members and administrative program groups. The exhibit files include views of permanent and temporary installations, as well as receptions for exhibit openings. The activities files primarily document annual meetings, Founders Day, local history meetings, activities of the Junior Historian program, other special events, and group portraits of the staff. The majority of the photographs were assembled into albums by Paul Vanderbilt, the former head of Iconography, although they were later disassembled for researcher convenience.

PH 196 and PH 196 (3) consist of photographs of activities, installations, exhibits, and members of Society staff, 1947-1948 and 2006-2008.

PH 689 includes approximately 50 photographs, undated, originally mounted on Upson board and Masonite, removed from large panels on which they were exhibited, consisting of images of Wisconsin residents, activities, and industry from the late 19th century to mid-20th century. It is believed all are copies of Society material otherwise represented in the collections.

PH 2225 includes projection transparencies (16 Kodachrome and 6 black and white 2x2-inch lantern slides, briefly captioned) of the Farm and Dairy Museum exhibition prepared by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin at the Wisconsin State Fair, 1960, consisting of views of exhibit cases and displays of early farm machinery and equipment.

PH 2801 (5) includes material from the exhibition “The Aitken Brothers: controversy and comedy in early films,” 1964, primarily mounted photocopies of contemporary news illustrations and cartoons concerning events in the southern United States during Reconstruction, primarily from Harper's Weekly, 1866-1868, of political cartoons, riots, civil rights bill in Congress, voting registration, rationing, and the Ku Klux Klan.

PH 3914 includes photographs of exhibit panels, 1987, for a traveling exhibit, “Woman's Work on the Farm: The Same but Different,” produced by the Iconographic Collections, Visual and Sound Archives at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, based on an earlier version assembled for the Second National Conference on American Farm Women at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. The original photographs, 1866-1982, featuring women at work on farms throughout Wisconsin, were made by: Ray Barth, A.A. Bish, William Buelke, Liz Chilsen, Dennis Church, Andrew Dahl, Harry S. Dankoler, Gerhard Gesell, Sherman Gessert, Blanchard Harper, Albert Green Heath, Wallace Kirkland, Alex Krueger, Herb Jacobs, James P. Jacobson, George T. Lindman, Charles Manson, Maude F. Martin, Charles Van Schaick, Allan Y. Scott, Richard Vesey, and Matthew Witt.

PH 4770 includes pencil drawings, circa 1970s, of the Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters building, and historic sites Wade House, Pendarvis, Stonefield, Old World Wisconsin, Circus World, Villa Louis, and Madeline Island. The drawings are signed J. Gruenwald. Also included is a reproduction of a drawing of the Wisconsin Historical Society library reading room by Ron Daggett.

PH 4866 includes photographs and photographic proofs, 1961 and 1968, showing activities in the Area Research Centers administered by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin four-year campuses and Northland College.
