UW-Milwaukee Office of the Chancellor Records, 1933-2017

Arrangement of the Materials

This collection was received in, and is organized in, multiple parts. Additional materials have not been physically or intellectually arranged and interfiled, and researchers may need to consult more than one part of the collection to locate similar materials.

The records of the Office of the Chancellor are arranged as subgroups corresponding to the term of each chancellor:

  1. Klotsche Administration Records, 1933-1980
  2. Baum Administration Records, 1972-1983
  3. Horton Administration Records, 1973-1986

  5. Schroeder Administration Records, 1986-1998
  6. Zimpher Administration Records, 1991-2011

  10. Mone Administration Records, 2014

The files are organized alphabetically by personal name, name of UWM unit, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memoranda, and reports. In some cases, after a change in administration, the chancellor's office continued to maintain active files from preceding administrations, and often added to them. During the processing of the collection, these files were left in the records of the last chancellor who used them. In select cases, the names of UW offices are followed by the names of the officeholders. For example:

  • Assistant Chancellor for Administrative Affairs [Gilbert L. Lee], 1977-1984

In addition to the normal chronological records, files containing more specialized information about a topic are found after the chronological files, as provided in the example below:

  • Affirmative Action Plan, 1974-1975
  • Affirmative Action Plan, 1985-1987
  • Affirmative Action Plan, Urban Universities Survey Analysis, 1976

The chancellors' correspondence with the University of Wisconsin presidents is found under "University of Wisconsin, President" or "University of Wisconsin System, President." Some of the dates of correspondence overlap, so the Guide lists the files in order of the presidents.

Series 6 and 7 (Zimpher and Santiago administrations) are further divided into two subseries of subject and event files. Subject files subseries consist of the administrative records of each chancellor's administration, and are arranged alphabetically by subject. Event files relate to events at which the Chancellors appeared and/or delivered an address, and are organized chronologically by date of event. See the series headings for additional scope and content notes for these materials.

The collection contains five additional accessions.
