Quantity: 1.6 c.f. (4 archives boxes) and 28 photographs Call Number: Green Bay Mss 48 Abstract: Records of one of the largest companies in Wisconsin that packed only peas. Founded by William F. Christel and others, the company packed six brands of peas in its plants in Valders, Hilbert, and St. Nazianz. The company was liquidated in 1963. The collection contains administrative and legal records, and extensive files of financial records. |

| Van Gorden family | Title: Van Gorden Family Papers : transcriptions and copies, 1940-1945
Quantity: 0.2 cubic feet (1 half-archives box) Call Number: Eau Claire Mss CE Abstract: Transcriptions completed by Cyrena Dierauer of her grandfather's diary (1940-1945) and her father's World War II letters home. Harry Van Gorden kept the diary while living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he operated a gasoline supply business and several gas stations. His diary entries reflect family life of the times, the gasoline business during World War II, and his interest in news events of the day. The letters are from his son, Archie “Red” Van Gorden, written while serving with the 32nd Division between July 1941 and December 1943 in Australia and New Guinea. Dierauer compiled the letters into a volume entitled “Red Arrow 'Red' Letters Home from WW2” with a brief family history, transcriber's notes photocopies of family photographs, a few newsclippings, and an index to names mentioned in the letters. |

Quantity: 0.1 c.f. (1 folder) Call Number: Wis Mss 48S Abstract: Diaries (1863-1864) of Captain Van S. Bennett of Company I, 12th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, giving accounts of the Siege of Vicksburg and other campaigns while he was a member of Sherman's army in Mississippi and Georgia, and his observations of the activities of the Union soldiers he served with. Also included are his notebook containing various accounts, orders for equipment, and lists of wounded; and the Orderly Sergeant's roll book for Company I (1861-1862). |
| van Steenwyk family | Title: Van Steenwyk Family Papers Physical Description: 6.0 cubic feet Call Number: MSS G Abstract: Papers of an early La Crosse, Wisconsin, banker and mayor, and of his family. Gysbert van Steenwyk, Sr. (1814-1902), who founded the Batavian Bank in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and was active in state and local politics. Van Steenwyk, a Dutch immigrant, served a term in 1873 as mayor of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and also served in the Wisconsin state legislature as assemblyman in 1859 and senator 1879-1880. Other family members represented in the collection include Mariette Nichols van Steenwyk, their son, Gysbert van Steenwyk, Jr., banker and businessman of La Crosse, Wisconsin; the son's wife Grace Pettinhill Hogan van Steenwyk; and Ella May van Steenwyk Cassels, daughter of Gysbert Sr. and Mariette van Steenwyk. The collection includes personal and business correspondence together with business and organization financial records, legal documents and genealogical information, papers and records relating to the estate of Cadwallader C. Washburn and miscellaneous materials. Among the business interests of his son Gysbert van Steenwyk, Jr., were the La Crosse Trust Co., Machine Products Co., La Crosse Rubber Mills, and La Crosse Floral Co. Apart from their business activities, the van Steenwyks were involved with the La Crosse Theater Co., and the Home for the Friendless. Some materials are in the Dutch language. |

(1 archives box) and 3 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Mss 40; Micro 570 Abstract: Records of the Vanguard League, a watchdog organization composed almost entirely of Afro-Americans and devoted to eliminating racial discrimination in the Columbus, Ohio, area. In 1950, it affiliated with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). The collection is composed of correspondence, minutes of the central organization and several committees, affidavits of black workers, leaque publications, and reports relating to race relations, housing, and labor. |

The collection documents the remembrances of six Milwaukee barbers about their personal background, apprenticeship, changes in barbering, role of female barbers, clientele, unionism, and the future of barbering. |

Photographs span from pre-World War I to post-World War II, and are mostly black and white. Most of the images are identified by camp or fort and a general date. Unidentified images include several photographs of camps or bases without a name, as well as a photograph of a celebration of the end of the war. World War I images from Europe include a battlefield and surrounding areas in German-held France and Germany. There are three images of Luxemburg, one of which is a color print, the rest are black and white photographs. Also included is a photograph from China, featuring American barracks there before World War II. |

(2 A size boxes, 1 B size folder, 1 C folder), 97 panoramic photographs Call Number: WVM Mss 1040 Abstract: Artificial collection of panoramic photographs of various units taken during the interwar period between 1920 and 1940. These photographs depict mainly military units and also include four images of Civilian Conservation Corps units. Of interest are several photographs related to the 15th United States Infantry Regiment stationed in Tientsin, China in the 1930's. Many of the images taken in 1920, particularly those of Separation Companies, are likely World War I troops returning home after their service. Images from 1939 and 1940 feature units that had begun training before the United States entered into World War II. These photographs feature both Camp Douglas and Camp McCoy in Wisconsin, the training camps for the National Guard between the two World Wars. |

Of interest is a photograph of Selective Service Training Camp number 2 in Camp Livingston, Louisiana, which includes Gerald Endl, a Medal of Honor recipient (Box 2, Folder 3). Images are largely photographs of units at camps, training, as well as a few photographs of companies and regiments overseas. Several images feature identified people, and these have been denoted with an asterisk in the container list. |
