Abstract: Records, mainly 1971-1972, of a nature education center owned by the National Audubon Society in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and of the local citizens group, Citizens for the Nine Mile Farm Nature Center, which worked to establish the center in 1972. Included is extensive correspondence between members of the citizens group, the National Audubon Society, and members of the Uihlein family, which owned the property, and their lawyers; legal documents; notes; minutes; microfilmed newspaper clippings and scrapbooks; and planning documents. More recent material consists of brochures, schedules, and advertising; an incomplete run of the Center's newsletter; and correspondence of Winifred Woodmansee and her files on the Education Committee of the Friends of the Schlitz Audubon Center.

Abstract: Records of the Scholarship, Education and Defense Fund for Racial Equality (SEDFRE), a fund-raising and legal defense arm of the Congress of Racial Equality, also involved in providing scholarships to minority students, organizing black communities, and training black leaders. Throughout its history, SEDFRE evolved from a predominantly fund-raising organization to an activist group dedicated to social change through grass-roots organizing and leadership development. Most of the records in the collection date from the period of SEDFRE's greatest activity during the mid-1960s, and consist of Administrative Files, which are the records of the executive director; Leadership Development Files; and Legal Department Files, collected and created by Carl Rachlin. Of the three, the files of the Legal Department are the largest and most comprehensive.

Abstract: Papers of Milwaukee-area artists Ruth Grotenrath and Schomer Lichtner. Grotenrath is well known for her dramatic, colorful floral images while Lichtner is best known for his whimsical and cheerful paintings and sculptures of cows and ballerinas. While the collection documents the work and lives of both artists, the bulk of the collection documents Lichtner's work, as he was more prolific and outlived his wife by 18 years.

Abstract: Records of the School District and other districts which merged with it. Most of the records date from ca. 1900 to 1960. The majority of the records are general record books, which contain minutes of the annual school board meetings, financial statements, and teacher contracts. For School District No. 1 (West Bend) there are also minutes of the annual alumni association meetings, disbound minutes of the school board, treasurer's books and several volumes recording school bond sales, and two histories of education in West Bend. There are also treasurer's records for several of the other school districts.

Abstract: Correspondence and miscellaneous records, mainly 1924-1942, of George Mathews and Anthony Janoch, clerks of the Herbster School, a school in Herbster, Wisconsin, built in 1924 and in existence through 1958. The Herbster School offered high school instruction which was unusual at the time for a small district. The correspondence highlights all areas of administrative concern including exchanges with the Department of Public Instruction, the Bayfield County Superintendent of Schools, Superior State Teachers College, and Beatrice MacLean, director of the school board. Also included are files on curriculum, transportation, construction, tuition, and emergency financial assistance during the Depression, as well as files on the hiring and discipline of teachers. A file of wartime sugar rationing records that itemize the height, weight, and age for every resident of the community is also included. Few records typical of most Wisconsin school collections, such as attendance records, are included.

Abstract: Miscellaneous records of the district. Included is an account book (1887-1918) of receipts and disbursements. An annual census and reports for 1918 and 1930-1933 give a breakdown of school enrollment by grades and provide the names of parents and their children of school-going age. An attendance register (1909-1915) illustrates the daily program study and recitation and also provides a record of attendance. A public hearing report on the proposed Slinger Union High School District (1957) is a verbatim transcript of the proceedings of the meeting. Record books (1887-1903) provide minutes of the school district meetings, teachers' contracts, and treasurer's bonds. There are also two scrapbooks put together by schoolchildren in Vasto, Italy in 1926 which were sent to the schoolchildren in the school district.

Abstract: Records of Rock School, 1903-1956, and minutes of the annual school meetings of District #2, 1879-1944. Rock School records consist of Annual Reports to the State of Wisconsin, 1933, 1938-1947; fragmentary school censuses, primarily from the 1930's; and school registers, spanning 1903-1956, but with significant gaps. The Annual Reports provide enrollment data and often include information on school activities, the school library, teacher experience, and handicapped students. The school census give parents names, addresses, names and ages of children enrolled in the school and the type of school (public or parochial) previously attended. In general, the school registers provide an attendance record, grades, comments detailing work accomplished during the year, the daily program, a record of visitors and sometimes a list of books read by each student. The volume of minutes includes the minutes of all the annual school meetings from 1879 through 1944 and includes treasurer's reports and other financial information.

Abstract: District records consisting of clerk's books (1891-1901 and 1951-1964) containing district meeting minutes, financial records, board meeting minutes, and payroll records. The 1891-1901 volume also includes school census reports (1891-1895) and the 1951-1964 volume includes a record of bonds issued for a new building and additions. Also included are pupil registers (1867-1959) and minutes of the Literary Society (1929-1940), a student organization that performed programs of readings and musical numbers and assigned classroom tasks.

Abstract: Primarily school district record books and teachers' registers. District record books, 1888-1891, contain proceedings of annual, regular, and special school district meetings, financial information, teacher contracts, and annual district census. The Library circulation record lists the name of the borrower, date of loan and return but does not list the title of the book withdrawn. Pupils' standing ledger contains monthly reports on students' attendance and scores in the various subjects. School registers, 1884-1949, contain each student's name, age, attendance record, record of visitors and notes about the curriculum. Volumes for 1884-1887 and 1888-1890 include a section showing each student's progress in the various textbooks and teacher's remarks. Volumes for 1896-1916 also give grades, and volumes for 1926-1949 include annual reports.

Abstract: This collection provides a thorough record of the activities of the School for Workers, the experiences of its faculty and students, and the role of workers' education in the Wisconsin labor movement from 1925 to 1965. The University of Wisconsin Summer School for Working Women in Industry was founded in 1925 by the Industrial Department of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). The School for Workers developed its relationship with organized labor and became co-educational in 1928. In 1933 the Works Progress Administration began to fund School for Workers courses across the state. In 1937 the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents approved a state-funded and year-round program. In 1944 the School for Workers was incorporated into the University of Wisconsin Extension program. Abstract: This collection provides a thorough record of the internal and external activities of the University of Wisconsin Extension School for Workers from 1960 to 1982. The collection documents the research and consulting work of individual faculty members such as University of Wisconsin-Madison based faculty Robert Ozanne and George Hagglund and the curricula and on the ground impact of the school's many institutes, workshops, conferences, and courses in Madison, Milwaukee, and nationwide. Common courses included steward training, collective bargaining, grievance handling, worker's compensation, industrial engineering, job evaluation, occupational health and safety, and labor law. From June 29, 1973 to September 30, 1980, the School for Workers developed the largest Occupational Safety and Health training program in the country funded by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's "New Directions" grant program. The collection is organized into: the incoming and outgoing correspondence of various faculty members department files documenting the school's budget and the activities of committees including the Executive Committee and Labor Faculty Advisory Committee; subject files detailing specific faculty research and consulting projects; course materials including the agendas, lesson plans, lecture notes, discussion questions, brochures, and other records related to specific workshops, institutes, and conferences developed on behalf of various labor unions; and instructional films including three developed by the School for Workers in partnership with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Abstract: Records of the Madison Collective of Science for the People, an organization (1969-circa 1974) of science graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison formed to educate the public about the misuse of science by business and government. In the collection are organizational records, correspondence, and printed material, but the records reveal relatively little of the history of the group. Some correspondence concerns related interest groups such as Science for Vietnam, Computer People for Peace, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The printed material contains information on the Vietnam War, particularly on the destruction caused through science and technology. Also present are the results of the collective's investigation of the Army Mathematics Research Center on the University of Wisconsin campus, including drafts of the book The AMRC Papers, background and source documents, clippings, and AMRC correspondence.

Abstract: Eleven episodes of Science Story, a Wisconsin-based science education television series that ran during the 1980s, and 50 videocassettes of unedited footage shot during the making of the series. The series aired on WHA-TV, the educational television station of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was produced by Robert Lovely. The film reel is a 16 mm color print with sound of one episode. The videocassettes are 3/4" U-Matic tapes with sound and color, with the exception of VBB 059-060 which is silent.

Abstract: Record books, pertaining primarily to the Town of Scott (1859-1949), but containing some records from the Town of Green Bay (1844-1858) in volumes 1-2. Records include proceedings of the annual town meetings and meetings of the Board of Supervisors; reports of receipts and disbursements; records of orders issued; records of oaths of office and bonds of officials; and in some instances, registers of chattel mortgages. Matters considered by the Board of Supervisors included petitions to buy out and discontinue roads, applications for liquor licenses, school district broundaries, and the levy of taxes.

Abstract: The collection consists of Scott Feldmeyer's papers documenting his work as a reporter in the Milwaukee area. The centerpiece of the collection is audio and videotaped interviews and broadcasts on issues pertaining to Milwaukee in the 1980's and early 1990's, including the trial of mob boss Frank Balistreri on charges of gambling and money laundering; Lawrencia Bembenek's escape from prison, flight to Canada, and extradition; the Jeffrey Dahmer serial killings and trial; and Michael McGee and corruption in Milwaukee City and County Government. In addition to the audio and videotapes, the collection contains correspondence, photographs, materials relating to a variety of honors and awards Feldmeyer received, copies of columns he wrote in the late 1990's for the City Edition and The Paper, and a wide selection of journalism memorabilia.

Abstract: Records of a fellowship club for boys organized by teacher Kate Scritsmier for the boys of her Sunday school class at the First Congregational Church, Menomonie, Wis. Organized informally in 1904, the Scritsmier Club became more formally constituted in 1913. Members enjoyed informal gatherings and activities such as games, stories, singing, father and son banquets, illustrated lectures, films, scouting, participation in various church activities, and an annual dinner meeting always held on the last Saturday night of the year. The bulk of the collection is incoming correspondence from club members who had left Menomonie. Of particular note are the letters written by those serving overseas during World War I. In addition, the collection includes bulletins (which contain club history, lists of members, etc.); financial materials; letters from Kate Scritsmier while she was away from Menomonie; clippings and articles; membership lists; newsletters; and additional files concerning various club actitivies. There is also one folder about Kate Scritsmier's participation in the suffrage movement.
