Plankinton Bank (Milwaukee, Wis.) Title: Plankinton Bank Records, 1866-1907

Abstract: Business and financial records of a leading Milwaukee bank from its organization in 1887 under the presidency of John Plankinton until its insolvency on June 1, 1893, under the presidency of Frederick T. Day, and for the ten years under the administrations of several assignees (including William Plankinton, Irving M. Bean, and Henry Herman) following insolvency. The bank closed following the loss of loans made to Frank A. Lappen & Company, a run on deposits, and a failure to reorganize and attract large investors. Records for 1866-1893 include ledgers of various types, registers of foreign items dispatched, correspondence, and other records. For the years after June, 1893, the papers relate to the operations of the several assignees, including assignments, court testimony and miscellaneous legal papers relating to litigation in Milwaukee County Circuit Court concerning the affairs of the bank, and assignee letter books.

Abstract: Planned Funeral Society of Wisconsin, formerly Thanatophely Ltd., was a nonprofit group closely affiliated with the First Unitarian Church in Milwaukee. Its purpose was to promote “the concept of dignity and simplicity in funeral rites”. The Society was a member of the Continental Association of Funeral and Memorial Societies, Inc., now known as Funeral Consumers Alliance. There were chapters in Wausau, Madison, Appleton, and La Crosse.

Abstract: These volumes list a weekly summary of the earnings, by picture, of all United Artists releases. This weekly summary was taken directly or indirectly from the daily contract registers. It appears that over the years different methods of transferring the total figures were used. The weekly summaries of each picture were totaled at the end of each month. These totals were then divided according to producer/corporation share, and the cumulative totals were transferred to the General Ledgers (Series 3C). Volumes for 1934, 1937, 1940, and 1947 were not received by the Historical Society with the rest of the series.

Abstract: Seven episodes of Playhouse 90, a ninety-minute drama anthology that ran on CBS between 1956 and 1960. All episodes are in black and white with sound. The films are 16 mm kinescopes. Videocassettes VBB 616 and VBB 620-621 are 3/4-inch U-Matic viewing copies. Videocassette number VHA 347 is a 1/2-inch VHS viewing copy. All episodes include commercials; products and companies advertised include Kleenex, Renault automobiles, the American Gas Association, Allstate Insurance, and Prestone Antifreeze.

Abstract: Records of a company formed in 1938 to produce plays written by its members: Maxwell Anderson, S. N. Behrman, Sidney Howard, Elmer Rice, and Robert E. Sherwood. In subsequent years the company admitted Robert W. Anderson, Kurt Weill, and Roger L. Stevens and began producing plays by outside playwrights. The company dissolved in 1960. The bulk of the records relate to the business and legal aspects of theatrical production although information on the artistic aspects of production is also included. The documentation relates to the company's relations with some of the leading American and British theatrical personalities of its era. Among them are Marc Blitzstein, Harold Clurman, Katharine Cornell, Hume Cronyn, Jose Ferrer, Garson Kanin, Elia Kazan, Joshua Logan, Alfred Lunt, Guthrie McClintic, Jo Mielziner, Spencer Tracy, and Margaret Webster. The production files of the company's general manager relate to such award winning plays as Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Darkness at Noon, Dream Girl, Fourposter, Ondine, The Patriots, Tea and Sympathy, and There Shall Be No Night. Included are extensively annotated stage managers' scripts, correspondence, budgets and financial statements, and contracts and agreements. About the organization and general development of the company there are correspondence and memoranda; general agreements and plans; financial records; and minutes of meetings on casting, play selection, and advertising policies. Some correspondence of individual playwright members is included. The collection also includes files on some productions with which Roger Stevens and General Manager Victor Samrock were independently involved. Samrock's files on Miss Liberty contain complete orchestrations by Irving Berlin. Stevens' files contain information on his association with the American Shakespeare Festival and Academy and Producers' Theatre.

Abstract: The Pleasant Ridge Negro community, near Lancaster, in Beetown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, existed from 1848 to 1959. The collection contains photocopied primary source materials such as photographs, emancipation papers, court documents, and land certificates, along with photocopied newspaper clippings, photographs, genealogies of the Greene (also known as Green), Shepard, and Richmond families, letters, unpublished histories, and memorabilia related to an African-American community and its inhabitants.

The club was originally named the North Valley Home Economics Club and from 1944 to 1954 was the Pleasant Valley Home Economics Club.

Abstract: Records of the second oldest church in Milwaukee, located on Milwaukee's East Side, dating from the church's founding in 1841 to the present. The collection includes annual reports and meeting minutes; financial records; membership records; newsletters and pamphlets; information about the church's pastors, including their sermons and research materials; photographs; and church club records including the Women's Guild. The collection also includes audio recordings of sermons, lecture series, and oral histories. Since its inception, Plymouth Church has been active in social, political, and religious issues, such as the abolition of slavery, temperance, and more recently, gay and lesbian issues, living with AIDS, and human rights.
